If you struggle to get in you won’t be the first. There’s no sign outside the door at this Taiwan stalwart. It’s a rather meta experience, press the bell and step inside the empty shopfront (slash noodle bar by day) marked Gubami, touch the jar to slide back the bookcase (the one on the right-hand side), ascend the stairs and the moody-hued boutique bar will reveal itself in all its speakeasy spirit. There’s no obvious drinks list either. The skilled bartenders work along the lines of the classics elegantly kicked up a notch, but are happy to pivot to preference. Let them know what you fancy and they’ll suggest something appropriate. Nibbles might take the form of a veggie consommé before your drink or smoked nuts roasted in booze-busting bacon fat.
