Chiltern Firehouse
London, UK
Opened almost a decade ago by celebrity hotelier Andre Balazs, Chiltern Firehouse's charmingly retro bedrooms, timeless exterior and retro-fitted restaurant have ramined a holy trinity for attracting A-list guests. Indeed, Grammy-winning all-female rock band Haim recently announced mid London festival performance that everyone was invited to a post-show party at said hotel. Tucked between Marylebone High Street and Baker Street, there’s nothing overtly edgy about this red-brick restaurant with rooms (26 in all) – but perhaps that’s the point. The Firehouse excels in friendly, polished and unpretentious service, plated up with some straight-forward hospitality. Rooms are glamourous, without being outlandish; the menu at the always-booked-out brasserie-style restaurant (which, luckily, holds back tables for hotel guests) is elegant, rather than opulent. Why, then, does it hold such celebrity pulling power? The DJ-decked out bar helps but, perhaps, most importantly, the hotel doesn’t take itself too seriously. Head into the Ladies, and you’ll notice a door scrawled in faux-lipstick with the words “Cigarettes and Men”: behind it sits the hotel’s smoking courtyard.
