The Ritz London
London, UK
The Ritz is so famous it needs little by way of introduction. Conceived by the hotelier César Ritz, when it opened in Mayfair in 1906 it soon cemented its reputation as London’s most luxuriant hotel, with no-expense-spared interiors and second-to-none service. Over the years it has enjoyed the patronage of everyone from Anna Pavlova and the Aga Khan to Charlie Chaplin and Noel Coward - Her Majesty the Queen even held her 80th birthday here. Storied it may be but this does not read as stuffy or pretentious. Rather, it’s packed with personality, from the 136 rooms and suites, a comfortable-luxe fusion of chintz, gilt, thick carpets and antique furniture, to the Neo-Baroque splendour of the main dining room, so OTT-fabulous, it’s little wonder there's a dress code. Champagne and caviar are served in the Long Gallery and cocktails at The Rivoli Bar are a must. That said, afternoon tea in The Palm Court, with silver tiers of dainty sandwiches and cakes and a pianist tickling the ivories in the background, is surely one of the most iconic experiences in the history of luxury London. This is “putting on the ritz” and then some.
