Kumiko

Chicago, US

Julia Momosé’s love letter to her Japanese heritage is one of the most coveted spots in Chicago for elevated cocktails, but as a self-described 'dining bar', where the food and drinks work together in tandem, the dining experience is just as enchanting. Led by chefs Alec Ching and Josh Mummert, both savory and sweet dishes – many of which are either inspired by traditional Japanese dishes or feature Japanese ingredients – are designed to pair well with cocktails and nihonshu. While oysters and caviar service are certainly a main draw, dishes inspired by Momosé’s upbringing, such as the Japanese potato salad and karaagé, are infused with so much soul they are the real hidden gems of the menu. The calm, elegant dining room is quite small, so reservations are recommended (though walk-ins are also possible).
