Located in the back room of family-run Chinatown mainstay Moon Palace – the restaurant has been in operation since 1995 – Nine Bar is Lily Wang and Joe Briglio’s playful “Asian-ish” cocktail club that has infused a youthful vitality into the neighbourhood since opening in 2022. The bar’s neon-tinged, futuristic atmosphere and design takes note from the neo-noir film Blade Runner, plus the buzzing aesthetic of the best cocktail bars in Tokyo – a combination that draws a young, high-energy crowd. The DJ set stationed in the far corner under floating umbrellas helps keep the pulse of the room alive, even during slow times. And a clever collection of bar snacks – think Ma Po Hot Fries, a McKatsu Sandwich and wok-fried chicken wings – pairs delightfully with the house cocktails, which put a spotlight on Asian flavours like midori, calpico, plum, barley, matcha, coconut milk, sichuan peppercorns and lemongrass.
