Queen Mary Tavern

Chicago, US

Named after former bar proprietor Maria Kafka, Queen Mary opened as a casual tavern in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighbourhood in 2015 with the goal of celebrating maritime spirits and drinking culture. A satisfying collection of rums, gins and fortified wines like sherry – including manzanilla on tap – complements a small list of beers and wines, but the cocktail offering is where the bar really shines. The Daily Grog is a rotating rum punch with seasonal citrus and spice, and the Navy Strength Old Fashioned, made with cask-strength rum and gin plus Demerara and Angostura, is one of the most emblematic cocktails on the menu. The happy hour specials – often affordable oysters and martinis – bring warmth to the coldest midwinter night, as does the interior decor; with antique furnishings thoughtfully arranged in wood-heavy Mid-Century space, the atmosphere is warm, welcoming and wonderfully unpretentious.
