Sportsman's Club
Chicago, US
Sportsman’s Club is a great example of a very specific breed of Chicago bar that wasn’t very prevalent when it opened in 2015, but is now commonplace throughout the city: the vintage-style Midwestern neighbourhood tap where locals gather for casual meetups, but the contemporary cocktails are made at a top-notch level. Housed in a 1900s-era building, the bar has an old-school vibe (think taxidermy, an Art Deco bar, big comfy booths) and a menu that features a rotating list of spirit-forward cocktails. Highlights include the eponymous Sportsman’s Cocktail, with whiskey, amaro, bitters and absinthe, a shot pulled from the amaro machine and cheap beers served by the effortlessly cool staff. A real bonus happens in the summers, when chefs from around the city come to the backyard BBQ series to cook every weekend –it’s by far one of the best hangout spots of the season.
