  • No.38 North America's 50 Best Bars 2023

Harking back to Prohibition-era America, where ‘milk’ served as a code word for alcohol, this restored eight-seater venue has one of Chicago’s best drinks pedigrees. Located on the second floor the Chicago Athletic Association hotel built in the 1890s, its tiny space is accented by wooden features and illuminated almost exclusively by the glow of candlelight. Within, its team of bartenders, clued-up on the profound history of the venue and the bottles that line its backbar, are ready to serve their concoctions created from a vast array of vintage spirits. The Attack 1972, which features 2006 calvados, brandy, amontillado sherry and aged amaro, is just one of the many honed and balanced creations that demonstrate bar manager Sam Perrie’s prowess. The bar also houses a profound collection of whiskies, from old world Scotches to new-generation Japanese offerings. Plates paired to its drinks offering by executive chef Mari Katsumura round off the experience at the bar.
