Bemelmens Bar

New York, US

Heralded by some as the most famous bar in New York City, Bemelmens at The Carlyle hotel is a stately 1940s-era lounge known for its gloriously strong martinis and enchanting wall murals drawn by the bar's namesake, Ludwig Bemelman, who created the Madeline children's books. In its prime, the bar drew celebrities, politicians and socialites to see and be seen; its iconic walls have been featured in an array of Hollywood films since; and still today the landmark Manhattan hotel bar draws visitors from around the world to experience its quintessential vintage NYC vibes. While the current menu is rather extensive to appeal to a wide variety of guests – and features modern touches like the 'tonics' section and a small collection of mocktails – the real gems are the classics. Note the cover charge on nights when jazz is on the menu, and the dress code, which kicks in from 5:30pm.
