Listening bars are somewhat of a new-ish concept anywhere outside of Tokyo, where there are a handful of in-the-know dens across the city’s districts to lose all sense of time in. They have now popped up in East London, New York, Mexico City and in 2022, Dubai. Honeycomb Hi-Fi comes from the creative minds behind Indochine and Miss Lily’s but it’s not just hailed as a bar, instead, it’s part record shop, part izakaya, music house, art-gallery and all-round hip hangout. With reservations nigh-on impossible to secure, the effortlessly cool speakeasy-style space sees weekly DJ vinyl sets bring in a low-key beat-bobbing scene who like to appreciate the Polaroid-covered walls while holding a Japanese-inspired cocktail like the Bitches Brew, made with sake, white vermouth, green apple cordial and a maraschino cherry. Upstairs, the menu runs through tuna sashimi and crispy karaage bites before grilled yakitori or a slippery bowl of dan dan noodles.
