What makes it special? Lo de Tere has been working its way up Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants ranking since 2020 and lands in the main list for the first time in 2024. A family enterprise led by Eduardo Marfetan and Elsa Curbelo that opened back in 2001, today the restaurant in the buzzy Uruguayan beach resort is directed by their daughter, chef María Elena Marfetán. Take a seat in the elegant dining room offering views over the marina – regular diners have napkins embroidered with their name – and enjoy the seafood-led tasting menu, utilising sustainably caught produce only.
Chef CV: Born and raised in the coastal town of La Paloma, Marfetan’s backyard was the Atlantic ocean. Taught to fish by her father, as a teenager she helped out at her parents’ casual restaurant and when the family moved to Punta del Este, she progressed to leading the kitchen at Lo del Tere.
Make a pact: Given her close relationship with the Atlantic, in 2019 Marfetan launched the East’s Ocean Pact in partnership with the local council, to which chefs and restaurants committed to using only line-caught fish.
On the menu: Choose from the elegant seven-course menu, which showcases dishes such as siri crab-filled ravioli with shrimp sauce, or you can order a la carte. There’s also a strong wine list featuring Uruguayan labels.
