Track record: Voted No.1 from 2017 to 2019 and again in 2023, Maido is consistently ranked among the finest restaurants in the Peruvian capital – a city with remarkably high gastronomic standards. It’s all down to chef-owner Mitsuharu Tsumura’s boundless creativity and commitment to gastronomy, which he honed in Osaka, Japan. As well as achieving the title of The Best Restaurant in South America 2024 at The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, beloved cook Micha was voted by his peers as the winner of the Estrella Damm Chefs’ Choice Award.

Discovering Nikkei: In 2024, the restaurant is celebrating 15 years with a Maido Experience menu which celebrates the past, present and future. Over a series of courses including multiple snacks, the tasting menu explores the cuisine that blends Peru with Japan – think exquisite nigiri and tiradito slices, made with the freshest catch of the day.

Welcome to Maido: In a large, open room in the Miraflores neighbourhood with high ceilings strewn with ropes shaped into the Japanese flag, the restaurant is a relaxed yet elegant setting where every guest is greeted with a hearty “Maido!” welcome.

Into the Amazon: Maido increasingly references ingredients and traditions from the vast Peruvian Amazon, with courses like the miniature jaune parcel of pork jowl and palm heart that nods to a rainforest staple, snacks of ‘ham’ made from sustainable paiche fish, and yucca served with Amazonian beans.

The perfect pair: The drinks pairing includes local beers, sakes and a wide range of colourful and striking cocktails. But don’t miss the wine list, created by Florencia Rey, winner of the Beronia Latin America’s Best Sommelier 2023.
