What’s the premise? Originally opened as a yakitori bar in the trendy neighbourhood of Pinheiros, Kotori evolved in recent years into a more expansive and refined concept, with a larger and more sophisticated space.
On the menu: While the grilled skewers remain a staple, the concise yet inventive menu now pays homage to yōshoku cuisine – Japanese interpretations of Western (primarily European) dishes. Highlights include classics like chicken karaage and liver pâté, here served with Asian pickles and toasted shokupan. Chef and co-owner Thiago Bañares elevates this approach, combining Brazilian ingredients with Japanese techniques and flavours, as seen in his eryngii mushrooms with chicken broth, tucupi, and mustard seeds, a contemporary take on the traditional batayaki.
All about that space: Kotori has transformed into a vibrant space with a ceiling covered in rich wood, offering a variety of dishes, from grilled vegetables and fish of the day to crispy karaage. To complement the food, the restaurant also features excellent cocktails, a signature of Bañares and his team, who are behind the acclaimed Tan Tan bar just a few meters away.
