Hearty home-cooking from a local star that pulls no punches

Lowe

On the Pass

Ali Shiddique

Unexpected location: Tucked away in the clubhouse of a leafy residential development, Lowe is an unassuming space that packs a culinary punch. The contemporary space is echoed in the collection of experimental, ingredient-driven dishes on the menu that are cooked simply, over fire.

The mastermind: Singaporean chef Ali Shiddique helped open 11 Woodfire, which made its debut on the list in 2023, before embarking on a new challenge at Lowe. Now proudly at the pass, he deftly entwines his culinary creativity with the restaurant’s deep-seated sustainability that earned it the inaugural Sustainable Restaurant Award 2022.

What about the food? Lowe has become known as one of the best breakfast spots in the city by applying the same no-rules approach it does to the main menu. Don’t miss the lobster benedict, doused in kale hollandaise, salsa fresca and espelette pepper. Come lunch and dinner time, opt for the smoked organic beef tartare with artichoke crisps and soured onion or whole roasted local sole with curry leaves and caper butter vinaigrette.

Community hub: Though it’s definitely worth the 30-minute drive from Dubai’s Downtown district, Lowe is the epitome of a neighbourhood restaurant servicing the surrounding community of Koa Canvas club members and Al Barari residents.

What’s the inside like? The interiors are clad in wood and unfinished concrete, allowing the open plan kitchen that occupies the entire width of the restaurant to pull focus. With minimal distractions, guests are treated to a show of quiet culinary theatrics. There’s no mistaking the fact that it’s all about the food.
