One or Two

Melbourne, Australia

If you’ve seen the Japanese TV series Midnight Diner, about a late-night eatery in Tokyo and its eclectic guests, you’ll understand the inspiration behind Melbourne’s One or Two, found in the city’s Chinatown. The first venue from bartender Andy Chu, this diminutive bar offers the best in Japanese hospitality. Set within an 1895 heritage building, the space – with just 24 seats – draws heavily on Japan’s wabi-sabi approach to design, highlighting the transience of nature through minimalist and natural elements, replete with warm colours and wood. Head down the unassuming back street, past a black door, and you’ll find an intimate space offering a selection of cocktails spanning everything from enduring classics to imaginative new creations. The whisky selection, meanwhile, is worth the visit alone, with interesting bottles from around the world, including Japan, of course. You might go for one or two, or you might stay for a few more.
