Shengyongxing Restaurant

Beijing, China

If you’re looking for a standout Beijing (Peking) roast duck experience with all of the wow factor but minus any pretension, Shengyongxing is for you. Located in northern Sanlitun, opposite the Canadian Embassy, the restaurant’s dining room boasts a stylish East-meets-West decor with well-spaced tables, a glass-encased wine cellar and elegant bar. The signature roast duck comprises premium birds aged for 30 days, then cooked in a date-wood-fired oven for 70 minutes, until the skin is perfectly crisp, before being served with a luxurious caviar topping (optional). The dish represents great value at $30 for a whole bird. Sides are equally accomplished: think Zhejiang-style shrimp, or braised cabbage, both of which taste like much more than the sum of their parts. Wine buffs will delight in the extensive list, too, and pairings are spot-on, with a Chinese ice wine really bringing out the best in the star dish.
