Marrecife
Guayaquil, Ecuador
Marrecife opened up in 2007 as a family-run affair. It comes from chef-owner Ivan Grain, who knew from a young age that he loved cooking with his family and went on to inherit and follow in the footsteps of his father. Though it began life with a seven-person team, the homespun restaurant now has a staff of 24 keeing the best Ecuadorian recipes alive.Primarily focussed on fish and seafood, dishes are colourful and full of flavour, riffing on home-cooked meals but with much more pizzaz. It’s quite the local spot too, with regulars spooning seafood casseroles and shrimp ceviches with smiles on their faces. It’s evident Grain knows his ingredients, most of which come from Ecuador’s coast – including octopus in olive oil, crab claws in sauce, and fluffy rice with scallops.
