Cookoovaya

Athens, Greece

How many chefs does it take to create a restaurant that’s so reliably excellent it has never gone out of style since it opened in 2014? The answer in this case is five. A group of celebrated Athenian gourmands originally collaborated to create Cookoovaya and its menu is broad-ranging as a result, featuring everything from flame-grilled meats to pies baked in a wood-fired oven and an extensive raw selection. However, the thread that binds everything together is the sort of honesty you only usually find in home cooking. Now, the restaurant is helmed solely by chef-patron Periklis Koskinas, who holds a deep reverence for Greece’s culinary traditions and regional ingredients. Dishes such as tiger prawn pie with aubergine and feta are typical, with many designed for sharing. This creates a relaxed atmosphere that contrasts pleasingly with décor that’s reminiscent of the glamour of the 1940s. All in all, it’s a winning recipe for an evening out.
