Mandarin Oriental Tokyo

Tokyo, Japan

Everything about Mandarin Oriental Tokyo breathes quiet luxury. The landmark hotel occupies the top nine floors of the Cesar Pelli-designed Nihonbashi Mitsui Tower in the Muromachi neighbourhood, aka the city’s happening shopping and entertainment district. But being so high up is a haven from the mega-city and the 37 million that inhabit it below, allowing you to enjoy birds’ eye views of the Sumida River, Tokyo Station, Imperial Palace Gardens, Shinjuku and the Tokyo SkyTree, in peace. On clear days, you’ll even catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji from the elegant spa. The hotel’s design draws on nature and the four seasons, with the hotel conceived as a large living tree, the not-long-ago-renovated guest rooms and suites as branches. Bathrooms come with three – yes, three – showers: body, hand and rain, as well as standalone sunken baths. The original yukata, Japanese kimono-style night robes are a nice touch. It’s often said that no other Tokyo hotel does fine dining like this – French, tapas, Cantonese, world-class sushi – though the pizza bar on the 38th floor is the place to be, with master pizzaiolo Daniele Cason’s organic creations garnering many accolades.
