White Robata is short for robatayaki, which translates to ‘fireside cooking’ in Japanese. True to its name, the restaurant specialises in grilling over open flames. Comic book fans will rejoice: the interior is heavily inspired by Japanese robot anime culture from the 80s and 90s. Whimsical murals cover the walls and the dining room is replete with 3D models and graphic depictions of famous characters from the era. Found in the Jaber Al Ahmad Cultural Center, the restaurant has a choice of indoor or outdoor seating. Ask for a table on the terrace for the chance to take in the fountain and the deep-red sunset. Dishes come in a range of sizes – the larger are designed for sharing, while smaller, lighter bites come from the raw counter. The menu changes regularly, but a mainstay is the six-hour braised short rib, which is finished on the white-hot grill. Playful, bursting with colour and the unexpected, other favourite courses are the spicy tuna wanton taco and the flank steak frites nigiri with purple potato floss.
