Morimoto

Doha, Qatar

This is sushi master Masaharu Morimoto’s first outpost in the Middle East, and – in keeping with the culinary guru’s background – it takes inspiration from the city of Nara, with contemporary artworks by Hiroshi Senju on the walls, and temple-worthy rose-gold studded columns rising through the dining space. Pick from the 16-seat sushi bar or more conventional table seating – or opt for a private dining room hidden behind opulent mirror doors. Morimoto devotees will opt for the omakase offering here: a multi-course menu that distills the essence of the master chef’s cuisine. Otherwise, an all-embracing a la carte menu delivers a casual experience that dances from Morimoto signatures, such as a self-titled oyster selection and lobster sushi rice risotto, to cross-culinary twists (think lobster carpaccio, Hamachi tacos and miso-glazed black cod). Ramen, yaki soba and ‘sushi and (wagyu) steak’ nights are also on offer. The cocktail selection is particularly inventive, melding unexpected Japanese flavours into ingenious tipples. Case in point? The Wagyu-infused bourbon manhattan.
