Bringing the fireside traditions of snow-capped Hokkaido’s Ainu people to Riyadh’s sizzling streets is no easy feat. Robata is a larger-than-life affair, all pale wood, industrial inflections and ample glass, with an eye-catching meat counter displaying the menu’s star ingredient. Dishes here are made for sharing, pairing charcoal-cooked plates with classic robata skewers, inspired by the customary “fireside” cooking of the Japanese region. The menu is split into sections to include hot, cold and robata small plates and sharing dishes, plus a substantial sushi and maki section. Expect globe-hopping flavours alongside Japanese classics – there’s as much ceviche, salad and sliders here as there are wagyu sandos, toro tataki and Hamachi nigiri.
