Wu (Nothingness)

Taipei, Taiwan

Entering the 51-100 extended list of Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2024 at No.94, Wu (Nothingness) has pedigree – it’s the latest venture from acclaimed bartender Kae Yin, one of the leading lights in Taiwan’s mixology scene (and a Diageo World Class Reserve alumni). Bringing a science nerd’s appetite for experimentation, Yin is revered for his technical wizardry and flawlessly balanced flavours. Prior to opening Wu, Yin founded the now closed Aha Saloon, which consistently ranked on Asia’s 50 Best Bars lists from 2019 to 2022. With a soft spot for retro style, vinyl and vintage cassettes, Aha Saloon’s sophisticated-but-fun concoctions starred Taiwanese and core Asian flavours, including oolong tea and mung bean. At Wu, the emphasis remains on Taiwanese ingredients and spirits, but the focus is strictly on classic cocktails. Don’t expect anything as pedestrian as a menu, but do envisage your desired drinks before you step inside. Enticing seasonal small plates are the perfect accompaniments. The narrow space features a long, communal wooden table, snug corners and Taiwanese design accents, with a backdrop of moody, low-lit decor: the perfect setting for afterdark refreshments.
