A classic of over 20 years’ standing on London’s high-end Indian dining scene, the Zaika name has been made essential again by relatively new owners Tamarind Collection (also behind Tamarind in Mayfair). The menu might make for dispiriting reading for anyone who prefers their Indian cooking un-messed with and not modern, but the skill of exec chef Karunesh Khanna is to evolve the likes of wild Madagascan tiger prawn with a green ‘marination’ of coriander, mint and chill without losing sight of what makes them enjoyable. Slick service, meanwhile, is both faultlessly polite and expertly knowledgeable, while a rare-for-Kensington cocktail bar turns out skilfully mixed drinks in this grandly proportioned former bank opposite Kensington Gardens.
