The Lanesborough
London, UK
It’s hard to believe that Knightsbridge, home to the 18th century Lanesborough House, was once a suburban village. Both have changed beyond belief, with the district morphing into London’s most exclusive shopping destination and the landmark mansion becoming The Lanesborough. The hotel set new standards for hospitality when it opened in 1991, with everyone from Madonna, Bianca Jagger and Sylvester Stallone dropping by – Stevie Wonder has even played on The Library Bar’s piano. Following Oetker Collection’s takeover in 2014, interior designer Alberto Pinto was commissioned to give the hotel a new look, combining its Regency spirit with sumptuous comfort. Expect butler service in the 93 rooms and suites – while the concierge team has a nothing-is-too-much-trouble attitude, whether that’s ensuring the Rolls Royce Phantom can take you down Sloane Street or booking a treatment in the super spa. When it comes to afternoon tea, the hotel takes top billing thanks to its inventive offering, and Shay Cooper’s modern British cookery in The Lanesborough Grill is an evening to remember. Despite its five-star status, it’s also remarkably family-friendly, with a Little VIP Club offering mocktail lessons and treasure hunts in Hyde Park for younger guests.
