From nightlife veterans and artists Ektoras Binikos and Simon Jutras (a visual artist and photographer and designer respectively), Sugar Monk is a cosy Harlem cocktail destination featuring creative drinks inspired by art, music, memory and historical events. The menu has a tight collection of artistic inventions, many with ingredients sourced by in-house forager Tama Matsuoka Wong, who provides the bar with wild edible plants that are used to make several lines of house bitters, liqueurs, amari and other exciting treasures. On Tuesday nights, the typically intimate vibe turns towards the roaring twenties as a nod to the speakeasies that anchored the Harlem Renaissance, with live jazz music. Just a quick jaunt from the famous Apollo Theater, it’s the perfect place to stop for a pre-show aperitif or post-show nightcap.
