Flour & Firewood

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

There was a time when Riyadh residents would take their first meal of the day in the comfort of their own homes, but brunch outings have surged in popularity of late, with the arrival of restaurants such as the 2019-opened Flour & Firewood being largely responsible. Located on Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Road in the Sulaymaniyah district, the casual eatery wouldn’t look out of place in NYC, with its wooden furniture, healthy-looking plants and glossy hanging lamps, plus a giant wall mural of Frida Kahlo that greets guests on arrival. Families and friends gather to make selections from a menu that contains pizzas, pasta dishes, shrimp pil-pil, a sunny eggs platter served with grilled halloumi and bacon, Nutella buns and the signature French toast – a thick slice of in-house-baked brioche fried in butter and topped with syrup, icing sugar and fresh berries. The rustic sourdough is a speciality, served with oil for dipping.
