Roka

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

For many, robata dining is the paragon of Japanese cooking, the smoky flavours of the traditional charcoal grill adding calcine depth to an already sublimely saporous cuisine. Go figure, then, that the finest iterations of izakaya-style dining sit in some of the world’s flashiest locales. Case in point? Roka, the swanky restaurant brand helmed by Rainer Becker. In Riyadh, amidst Nippon-inspired interiors, the menu dishes up a vast selection of tempura, sushi and sashimi, and robata favourites alongside a well-priced tasting menu, with favourites like yuzu miso-marinated black cod, salmon teriyaki and sesame-glazed spicy beef skewers. The restaurant’s $80 brunch experience is legendary: a set menu that barrels through sashimi platters, robata sharing plates and “live cooking stations” serving up okonomiyaki, sandos and gyoza selections.
