Demorondanga
Montevideo, Uruguay
On a corner in Cordón is an arsenic-green-painted bar where a queue starts to form around 8pm, with hungry locals and curious tourists lining up to try fatty, flavoursome tucineta pork with kimchi, cavatelli pasta with mushroom ragu and traditional grappamiel (grappa and honey). Demorondanga doesn't take reservations, so arrive early to peruse the blackboard menu – a list of ten or eleven sharing plates like crab cakes with creamed corn, chili and miso or shrimp causa (potato terrine) and larger tapas like rib eye steak with Creole salsa. Despite its name – which translates as ‘something of little value’ and refers to the minimalist space (think corrugated steel ceilings) – there’s plenty of vino, vinyl and vibes to go around so bring your mates and show them the neighbourhood’s coolest hangout.
